Transportation – Train, bus, taxi, tram and private car + driver (Sahara Trip).

Tips

  1. Apply visa kat Morocco Embassy, Jalan Ampang. Checklist: visa application form, flight itinerary, valid passport, salinan IC, 2 keping gambar.
  2. Airbnb remains our favourite. Kami book untuk first few days, then we figured out the rest masa kat sana. Kena try stay kat riad!
  3. Currency Morroccan Dirham (MAD/Dhs) is not available in Malaysia and RM is not accepted for exchange in Morocco. So, better tukar duit ke usd/euro/gbp.
  4. Kalau travel naik bus boleh consider 2 bus companies; Supratours and CTM. Supratours is part of ONCF (rail services) tapi kami cuma naik CTM bus masa trip ni. Tiket kami beli either on the day of travel or a day in advance. Tapi better beli ticket awal sikit sebab masa kat Chefchaouen, tiket CTM bus ke Fes habis and we ended up naik bas yang agak uzur (a bit cheaper tapi tak selesa utk 5.5 hour journey. Takde aircond dan tingkap tak buka dan banyak berhenti). Takde train/supratours bus dari Chefchaouen ke Fes so memang semua berebut tiket CTM agaknya.
  5. Taxi ada dua jenis iaitu Grand taxi and Petit taxi (can take 3 passengers. So kalau naik berdua, don’t be surprised if the taxi stops to pick up any stranger yang tahan taxi tu lepas kita naik). Petit taxi sesuai untuk short rides dalam bandar. Better cari yang guna meter tapi kalau takde, negotiate your price before you get in. If he refuse, try another taxi.

Tips tambahan

Ada kawasan namanya Chefchaouen all blue. Nak tahu kenapa? Sebab di situ banyak ular, ular “buta” matanya bila bertentang dengan warna biru. Bangunan di setiap bandar Morocco juga ada warna khusus.

Marrakesh: Merah bata; casablanca: putih. Rabat: putih Algiers: putih Fes: biru nila.

Itinerari

Day 1 : Casablanca – Rabat
🚉Train from Aeroport Med V to Rabat Ville (1 transfer- Casa Voyageurs): 80 dirham, 2 hours.
🔸Rabat
Morocco’s capital city- The easiest way to get around this city is by tram or petit taxi. Jumpa a group of returning Malaysian students masa layover dan kebetulan ramai yang study kat Rabat. So, bila sampai Casablanca, just ikut diorg naik train- jimat masa sebab tak payah nak study map or pergi tourist information. Famous sights yang kami sempat pergi : Kasbah des Oudaias, Hassan Tower, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Medina of Rabat.

Day 2 : Rabat – Chefchaouen

CTM Bus : 100 dirham, 5 hours (luggage 5 dirham)

Day 3 : Chefchaouen

This blue city is an absolute must. The most laid back and hassle-free of all. Hand downs, my favourite city! Sebab takde proper plan, we did nothing but wandering around the blue hidden alleyways for hours with endless photo sessions.

Medina ni tak besar sangat but since it’s built on a hill, one will easily get tired walking up and down the narrow streets. Everything is blue. Blue streets, blue walls, blue houses, blue doors. Every corner leads to a different shade of blue. Sangat cantik tapi bila semua biru memang senang confused and lupa jalan sebab nampak sama.

Jika sesat just pergi semula kat Chefchaouen’s main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Ada satu pokok tinggi dekat tengah. So,boleh guna as a landmark.

To get one of the best panoramic views, just take a 20mins hike from Ras el maa to the white Spanish mosque. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset overlooking this blue city.

Day 4 : Chefchaouen – Fes

Local bus : 60 dirham, 5 ½ hours (luggage 5 dirham)

Fes
No visit to Fes would be complete without a visit to the old, maze-like medina (Fes el Bali- a UNESCO World Heritage Site). It felt like we’ve travelled back to the old times. Attractions not to be missed: Al-Attarine Madrasa,Al Qarawiyyin University/Mosque, tanneries (Fes is famous for its leather goods), Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, The Merenid Tombs (a short taxi ride from Bab Rcif cost us 11.50 dirham. Located on the hill, you can get a bird’s eye view of the old city of Fes)

Chefchaouen The Blue Pearl شفشاون الجوهرة الزرقاء‎.

Day 5 : Meknes – Volubilis- Moulay Idriss

Train from Fes to Meknes : 22 dirham, 40 mins
Grand taxi : 350 dirham, 5 hours (Train station- Volubilis-Moulay Idriss-Train station)
Train from Meknes to Fes : 22 dirham, 40 mins

A day trip from Fes. Not exactly a must do, tapi siapa yang suka historical places, definitely worth a visit. Volubilis – Entrance fee, 10 dirham per pax. We took less than 2 hours to explore this UNESCO site. Moulay Idriss is one of the holy sites in Morocco.

Day 6- 10 : 4D3N Sahara Tour (private car with driver)

A small, private group- kami berdua and a couple from Germany. Harga tour termasuk: transportation (4wd), driver/guide, breakfast & dinner, accommodation (1 night hotel kat Merzouga, 1 night nomadic tent kat tengah gurun, 1 night hotel kat Ourzazate), camel trek in the Sahara, hotel pick up & drop off.

Lunch not provided. Yang tak best semua restaurants dia bawa utk lunch mahal gila. Berganda-ganda mahal dari bandar lain. Selamatlah food portion tu besar so kami boleh share.

Trip kami start dari Fes dan berakhir kat Marrakech. We stopped by various cities/ attractions along the way while passing through the Atlas Mountains; Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia (Ziz Valley), Merzouga, Oasis, Rissani, Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, Kasbah of Taourirt, Ourzazate, Ait Benhaddou, Tizi and Tichka pass.

One of the most spectacular landscapes I’ve ever seen. Berbaloilah journey yang lama from one city to another (paling lama from Fes to Merzouga rasanya- dekat 9 hours)

Ribut pasir di sahara

The highlight of this tour – camel trekking into the Erg Chebbi dunes, overnight in a nomadic tent (boleh juga tidur kat luar ‘under the stars’ kalau tahan sejuk), enjoying dinner and berber songs around the campfire, climbing the sand dunes + star-gazing. Tour ni start around 5pm from our Kasbah hotel (great location! in front of the desert).

Halfway through our ride, we’re hit by a sandstorm. Cuaca tak okay, lepas sandstorm siap dapat pakej guruh dengan hujan, so memang takde sunset. Esoknya, bangun awal untuk tengok sunrise over the sand dunes. Sangatlah cantik! Lepastu naik semula camel (1.5 hours) untuk balik ke Kasbah hotel around 9am.

Boumalne, Ouarzazate, Morocco.
Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Day 11-12 : Marrakech

Surprisingly, we love this city! It’s a complete opposite of what we’d thought. So don’t let negative reviews put you off. From our experience, there was a lot more to like than dislike.

Things to do: walk around the medina/souk, Koutoubia Mosque, Hagia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, Jardin Majorelle, Bab Agnaou, Saadian Tombs, Jemaa el Fna, Ouzoud Waterfalls (day trip from Marrakech. we skipped this and opted a visit to Hammam).

Day 13 : Marrakech- Essaouira

CTM Bus – 75 dirham, 2 ½ hours

Essaouira

Day 14 : Essaouira

The laid back vibes in this coastal town remind me of Chefchaouen. The medina is relatively small and easy to navigate and don’t miss a visit to the harbour (another endless shades of blue).

Day 15 : Essaouira- Casablanca

CTM Bus : 140 dirham, 6 ½ hours

Cassablanca, Morocco

Day 16 : Casablanca/Fly home!

Hassan II Mosque- A must visit when in Casablanca. It’s one of the largest mosques in the world and located on a platform overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There are guided tours throughout the day (120 Dirham) but we visited at the time of maghrib sebab nak masuk free (open to all Muslims at daily prayer times).

Jika taknak ambil package tour, boleh arrange sendiri untuk pegi Merzouga (Sahara) via public transport. Supratours ada pegi Merzouga and CTM pergi Rissani (40km away from Merzouga).

Plan awal kami nak pergi sendiri, tapi sebab dah last minute and tak sempat nak buat research, kami decide ambik tour je.

Alert : Be aware of fake guides and don’t simply accept directions from strangers.

Food: murah dan sedap! so memang kami makan kat luar je. Wajib makan tajine. Yang paling best kami makan tajine kat Chefchaouen, 3-course meal for 50 dirham.
